The Queerish Book Club March 2024: All About Love

The Queerish Book Club is a monthly book club that specialises in LGBTQ+ literature. It typically runs on the last/second to last Monday of the month at 7pm and takes place at The Queerish Bookshop.

Our March book is All About Love by bell hooks and our meeting will take place on Monday 25th March at 7pm.

Below are the questions we will discuss at the club. Please note the questions contain spoilers.

All About Love - Book Club Questions

1. bell hooks defines love as 'the will to extend one's self for the the purpose of nurturing one's own or another's spiritual growth' and that 'love is a combination of care, commitment, knowledge, responsibility, respect, and trust.' What did you think of this definition? Is there anything you would modify?

2. All About Love was published in 23 years ago in 2001. Do you think hooks' writing is outdated? Or is it timeless?

3. hooks emphasises self-love as a prerequisite for healthy relationships. How does she define self-love, and what are some challenges we face in cultivating it within an often critical world?

4. hooks emphasises the importance of extending love beyond romantic relationships and into our communities. What are some ways we can cultivate a more loving and supportive environment in our local communities?

5. After reading the book, has your understanding of love evolved? Can you identify an area in your life where you could practice/utilise hooks' teachings? Why/why not?
