The Queerish Book Club is a monthly book club that specialises in LGBTQ+ literature. It typically runs on the last Monday of the month at 7pm and takes place at The Queerish Bookshop.

Our July book is Dreamland by Rosa Rankin-Gee and our meeting will take place on Monday 29th July at 7pm.

All of our free seats are booked so there are no space left open.

Below are the questions we will discuss at the club. Please note the questions contain spoilers.

Dreamland - Book Club Questions

1. You are immersed in a world crafted by Rankin-Gee’s words. Chance speaks directly to you, the reader, as if you are Franky. How does the mix of second-person narrative with first-person draw you deeper into the story? Consider the ways in which this perspective shapes your understanding of Chance and the dystopian setting. Does it create a sense of intimacy or distance?

2. The author presents a chilling vision of a British future shaped by the devastating impacts of climate change. How does Rankin-Gee use these elements to create a dystopian world that feels both terrifyingly plausible and deeply unsettling? Discuss the ways in which the novel explores the consequences of these societal and environmental crises on individuals and communities.

3. Dreamland delves into complex and abusive family dynamics. How does Rankin-Gee explore themes of abuse and trauma within these relationships? Consider the characters of Chance and her mother, and how their experiences illuminate broader societal issues.

4. The ending of Dreamland is ambiguous. What are your interpretations of the final scene? Do you think there is a glimmer of hope for the future?
